Research Data Management (RDM): Tri-Agency RDM requirements

NSERC, CIHR, and SSHRC RDM requirements

The funding agencies released in March 2021 the "Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy", which aims to promote research excellence in Canada by encouraging sound research data management practices. The policy institutionalizes research data management in all eligible postsecondary institutions and research hospitals that administer CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC funds. It includes the following requirements:

  • Institutional research data management strategies: Each postsecondary institution and research hospital must have a research data management strategy and make it public (implementation date: March 2023). The ÉTS RDM strategy is now available here (in French only).
  • Data management plans: The funding agencies will require that data management plans be submitted to the appropriate agency for certain funding requests. If applicable, this requirement will be specified in the request for proposals (implementation date: spring 2022).
  • Data deposit: Grant holders are required to deposit research data, metadata, and codes that directly support research findings published in journals, as well as preprints resulting from research funded by the funding agencies, in a digital repository. The deposit must be made at the time of publication. The deposit must ensure secure storage, preservation, and curation of data (implementation date: gradually adopted once institutional strategies have been reviewed - Since January 2008 for research funded by CIHR) - (Science Canada, 2023).
